How Chipotle's Rewards Points System Works
Chipotle expanded its customer base through what founder Steve Ells built as a simple, easy-to-use ordering system — and the company’s growth from startup to global brand traces closely to how it layered technology on top of that original idea.
From one store to a global brand
Founded in 1993 by Colorado chef Steven Ells, Chipotle Mexican Grill now operates more than 2,500 locations worldwide. The original concept was straightforward: high-quality meals from fresh, natural ingredients, served in under 10 minutes. It worked well enough that long lines routinely formed outside the front door.
The online ordering system
Launched in 2009, Chipotle’s online platform covers takeout, delivery, catering, and in-store pickup. Its share of the business has grown steadily — online orders represented 16% of Chipotle’s revenue, up from 12% just a few years earlier — and the company added voice-activated ordering through Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa to remove even more friction.
Chipotle Rewards
The points-based loyalty program costs nothing to join and rewards frequent visitors directly: 10 points per dollar spent, with 1,250 points redeemable for a free meal. Membership nearly doubled during the pandemic, growing from 8.5 million members in February 2020 as more customers shifted to digital ordering.
Marketing and technology
Chipotle pairs real-time marketing with celebrity partnerships — including chefs like Jamie Oliver and Rachael Ray — to reinforce its food-safety and quality messaging. On the technology side, AI-driven recommendations personalize the menu based on a customer’s order history, tying the ordering system and the loyalty program into a single, increasingly personalized experience.
