Chick-fil-A, McDonald's & Chipotle: Fast Food Loyalty Tiers Compared
Having a rewards program is as essential for a restaurant as having a logo. Three of the largest fast-food chains show three different ways of building one.
Chick-fil-A
Founded in 1946 and now operating more than 2,800 locations, Chick-fil-A runs its Chick-fil-A One® program as a four-tier structure:
- Member — 10 points per dollar, plus a birthday reward
- Silver — 11 points per dollar, plus the ability to gift rewards to others
- Red — 12 points per dollar, exclusive rewards, and insider access
- Signature — 13 points per dollar, plus unique member experiences
By 2017, the program had roughly 13 million active members, with each tier giving customers a visible reason to keep spending toward the next level.
McDonald’s
MyMcDonald’s Rewards® runs on a simpler, single-tier points system: 100 points per dollar spent, redeemable from 1,500 points (a free sandwich or side) up to 6,000 points (a Big Mac or Happy Meal). Bonus points for app sign-up and in-app payment nudged adoption further, helping the program reach 20 million users by 2021 — with the McChicken as the most redeemed reward.
Chipotle
Chipotle Rewards® keeps things straightforward: 10 points per dollar, with 1,250 points redeemable for a free meal, or donatable to charity. Membership grew from 8.5 million before the pandemic to significantly higher numbers as digital ordering habits stuck.
The common thread
Each program uses a different structure — flat, tiered, or donation-enabled — but all three tie repeat purchases directly to visible, attainable rewards. That’s the part worth borrowing regardless of your menu.
