How to Design and Promote Referral Programs for Best Results

Referral programs incentivize existing customers to bring in new ones, and they’ve become one of the most cost-effective ways to acquire customers while retaining the ones who make the referral. Programs generally split into two types: single-sided, which rewards only the person referring, and double-sided, which rewards both the referrer and the new customer.

Seven steps to building one

1. Determine your target audience. Understand who your existing customers are and what would actually motivate them to refer a friend.

2. Choose a program type. Decide between single-sided and double-sided based on your goals and what your market responds to.

3. Create the incentive. Design rewards — discounts, free products, cash — that are motivating enough to drive action without eating into margin.

4. Communicate clearly. Explain how the program works over email and social media, in language simple enough that nobody has to guess.

5. Simplify participation. Referral codes and a simple online form remove the friction that stops people from sharing in the first place.

6. Encourage sharing. Promote the program actively across every channel you already use — it doesn’t sell itself.

7. Track results. Use analytics to measure what’s actually working and refine the program from there.

Done properly, a referral program compounds — happy customers become an acquisition channel, and the cycle keeps feeding itself.
